Chocoholic Frolic Delicious Success!

The Scranton Cultural Center was crowded again for the third year in a row as SCOLA presented the 5th Annual Chocoholic Frolic. More than 500 people strolled in this year’s more spacious setting, sipping their champagne and sampling all kinds of chocolate. There were several improvements this year that all agreed were a smashing success.

This year’s room arrangement added twice as much space to the ballroom floor. The balcony was completely opened up with tons of tables and chairs…and a cash bar…to conserve energy!! Best of all, the Patron tickets this year allowed participants to enter the Frolic one hour before everyone else! The die-hard chocolate lovers thought that was the icing on the (chocolate) cake.

Next year’s Chocoholic Frolic is scheduled for Sunday, February 27. It IS scheduled late, but can’t be helped. Broadway Theater has it booked already for the Sunday after Valentine’s Day – our usual day – February 20. So mark your calendar now.

Lastly, if you really LOVED some of the delicacies that were offered, but can’t remember the “Who” or the “Where,” we are listing all the vendors’ names and addresses for your convenience below.

See you next year!

We Have Company!

Lots of happiness around the SCOLA offices these days! Luis Canales, our Intake and Assessment Specialist, is being visited by his parents, Roman and Lucia. They are from Honduras and will be visiting for three months.

SCOLA’S NEWEST CITIZENS

Darwin Chanaba and his wife, Maria Castro, recently visited the office to share the great news…on December 10 they passed their citizenship tests!

Darwin and Maria, from Ecuador, first became SCOLA students in July of 2004. Besides coming to classes at SCOLA, they had Conversation Partners in Joe and Marilyn Kaminski, with whom they used to meet over dinner! Most recently, the Chanabas’ tutor was Naomi Alamar, our long-time citizenship tutor.

Citizenship is a long-awaited, worked-hard-for, rewarding, and precious achievement. Congratulations to all!

Read Chris Kelly’s Story on SCOLA

"The only medicine for suffering, crime, and all other woes of mankind, is wisdom. Teach a man to read and write, and you have put into his hands the great keys of the wisdom box." - Thomas Huxley, 1825-1895

At 6 feet, 10 inches, Dennis Short is a big man with a small name.

The top half of him seems taller than Mary Hanley, but the diminutive octogenarian is a giant in Dennis' big, soft eyes.

Three times a week, the two meet at SCOLA Volunteers for Literacy on Boulevard Avenue in Scranton, where Dennis and Mary have been working for two years to improve his reading skills.

AAUW Presents Check

The Scranton Branch of the AAUW (American Association of University Women) recently made a generous donation in memory of Ann Cahoon. AAUW, an organization that advocates for equity for women, has been a supporter of SCOLA for many years. Ann Cahoon was both a long-time member of AAUW and volunteer tutor for SCOLA. We featured an article on her a couple of weeks ago and it can still be seen below.

The picture above shows Ethel Breuche (also a SCOLA tutor) the AAUW Treasurer presenting a check to Diana Statsman, Executive Director of SCOLA, and also a member of AAUW.
