The Scranton Council of Literacy Advance, also known as SCOLA Volunteers for Literacy, is a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization that provides confidential literacy instruction at no charge to adult residents of Lackawanna County, both native and foreign-born, so that they may acquire the basic reading, writing, and life skills necessary to function effectively in society.  SCOLA also promotes literacy for all people through advocacy, support, training, and outreach programs.

Wagner came to SCOLA in 2004.  He heard about us from a friend at work.  Wagner has been coming to classes, using the computer, and meeting with various tutors ever since.  He began at the Low Intermediate ESL level and has progressed to Advanced ESL –the highest ESL level before “testing out” of the program.

In the last year, Wagner has gone into business for himself.  He owns and operates two used car dealerships.  He hopes to sell new cars one day, too.

Wagner is a perfect example of ESL students who come to the United States looking to improve their situation – to grab their piece of the American dream.

When asked what he thought about SCOLA, Wagner had this to say.  “I think SCOLA is a good thing for everyone who needs to learn English for three reasons: first, it’s free, second, you actually learn English, and three, it’s easy to get here for lessons because it’s open when students need it to be.”                                                                         o

Featured Student

Wagner Gomes is from Goiania, Brazil.  He came to the United States in 2002 by himself.  In Brazil English is taught in school, but (just like language classes here) nobody actually speaks it.  In Brazil, Wagner was a bank manager and owned a car dealership with two locations selling both new and used cars.  The name was CIACAR.  He worked at the bank during the week while his wife worked at the dealership.  Then he worked at the dealership on the weekends.  Wagner’s first job in the U. S. was working in a quarry where he worked for three years.  Following this, he worked in a factory, which produced airline food.  (more)
